Fresh out of college with a pocket full of optimism, Alicia McGarry set out to change the world by way of journalism -- she would write! Cover politics! Issues of socioeconomic importance! She would write ... features? Ad copy? Disenchanted, Alicia soon found herself skirting the slippery slope's edge of a cubicled existence, in which she would likely have renounced her calling, half-heartedly clambering up the corporate ladder while subsisting solely on coffee, Chipotle and MySpace. Then, along came Kai... One gaze into his eyes and she resigned from that rat race, opting instead for the rugrat chase with a side of freelance. Amidst the overwhelming joy, chaos, triumph and utter absurdity of year one as a work-at-home mom, her experiences have brought about a clarity of intention in how her mission to make her mark might be truly made manifest: To change the world, she must begin in the bungalow, because great things come from small packages.

The Haves and the Have Nots: An Introduction

Sure, the same can be said for all kinds of scenarios ... "there are two kinds of people." However, the extent of such is never quite so far-reaching as when it's those that have kids and those that don't to which you are referring with such a statement.

This blog shall serve as an introduction to a new (and likely, sporadic -- another characteristic of "the haves," incidentally) blog series: The Haves and the Have Nots

Yesterday, I was at a baby shower for the adorable Karina (love her, love her, love her to itsy-bitsy pieces!), when I truly became cognizant of the vastly immense chasm that exists between:

1) those of us that already wear this badge of maternal or paternal courage

2) those that are still waiting for the mind-altering experience of parenthood to become their reality

3) those that say things like, "Whoaaa, my cat weighs more than your baby -- he's like 13 pounds!"

We were conversing about the current approximate size of Karina's baby boy-in-waiting, Tiago, when one of her friends responded with the cat comparison to the quoted, current fetal weight of "about three pounds."

By no means am I knocking that quite adorable cat aficionada that graced our presence at Karina's shower yesterday, but this statement was so totally indicative of the very different places in which our respective minds reside.

A clever retort was quick to follow from a fellow shower-goer who, while childless now, was clearly poised for parenthood:

"Dude. Let's all hope your cat still weighs more than Tiago when he's born!"

Yes, let's all hope this for this preciously petite preggo -- just look at this babe with a basketball for a tummy, would you?
