Mommy Milestones

Mommy Milestones is a voice of REALITY for moms. This refreshing blog emphasizes that mom, her changing life and having fun are as important as raising your baby. Tips and time savers for motherhood, parenting, kids and more are offered from a mom who is living it now.

Shower Time

AJ, as we call him at home, was excited to take a shower with Daddy. Daddy got in, made sure that the water was the right temperature and said, "Okay, you can get in now." That was his first mistake!

AJ opened the shower door and Daddy saw that he had not taken off his pajamas. Daddy said "AJ, go take off your pajamas and get in," mistake number 2.

AJ listened took off his pajamas and ran into the shower. A second later, I heard Daddy say, "AJ, you still have your underwear on!"

AJ looked down and said, "Oh, I guess I forgot."

Obviously, Daddy had not been clear enough and the critical step of removing underwear for a shower was missed. For a kid that likes to be naked as much as he does, you would think that stripping down for a shower would be easy.

I remember watching a Bill Cosby skit with my parents when I was younger, they were laughing hysterically and I thought that the stories were pretty funny too. What I didn’t realize was just how true all of his stories were, which was why my parents were laughing so hard.

As a mom, I now understand how literal kids are and that they need exact instructions in order to accomplish a task.

For example, I used to think that sending a potty trained child into the bathroom and reminding them to wash their hands was good enough.

Much to my surprise, my own fully potty trained son listened to these instructions and walked out half naked with dripping wet hands. He had gone potty and washed his hands. For some reason, being naked after a bathroom break makes sense to him but not for a shower; kind of makes you wonder.

I have since added some frequently missed steps to my bathroom request: "Please go into the bathroom, go potty, flush the toilet, pull up your underwear and pants, wash your hands with soap, dry them, and come out."

He now gets most of the steps, most of the time.

I think that AJ hears step by step instructions so often that he has learned the art. AJ lays out steps for Boo, our youngest, when they play and quickly corrects him when he misses one of the steps. He probably learned that from us too.

If you have a fun story, please tell me!

Off to make another Mommy Milestone.
