Thanks to JoJo’s Circus on the Disney channel, my boys have been introduced to beginning yoga. They know about as many poses as I do and are far more limber. They bend and stretch into positions that hurt me to watch.
I was so impressed with their ability to watch the poses and mimic them that I decided to buy a kids yoga DVD for us to do together. A little extra practice could definitely not hurt my less than perfect yoga moves. Besides, I thought that if I could start having fun with the poses I might be able to stop my mind from taking it all so seriously.
I hoped that I would learn something from the boys with their overt enthusiasm to become an animal or popcorn and enjoy a belly laugh with the boys while doing the exercises.
The DVD that I bought was for ages 3-6 and incorporated traditional moves with fun names like Volcano, Moo-Meow, and my favorite the Jabberwocky Jellyfish.
The boys were totally engaged in the fun, playful moves and were excited to clap their hands and feet like a seal not to mention moving their arms and legs together like a train.
It did not take long for me to find that I may never be as limber as the boys but I can have fun with them, get a little exercise and enjoy yoga from a different perspective.
The next time that I go to my yoga class I am going to try to picture the boys standing with me, see the moves as a fun challenge to become the best downward dog that I can be, and laugh at myself when it seems to be too serious. A little yoga at home has made a world of difference in my yoga experience, plus I have gotten to spend 20 minutes a day laughing with the boys.
Off to make another Mommy Milestone.
