    latching difficulties

I know sometimes I have to pull my little guys lower lip down with my finger, or just wait til he is really wide open before latching him on. Isn't it weird that they only have problems in one or two positions? I swear my right breast gets so much sorer than the left one.

Yeah, my first son had this latch issue. We had to constantly pull out the bottem lip upon latch. Sometimes, he'd suck it back in. But I'd just sit there holding his chin down while nursing. This may force her upper lip to latch better in the process.

Makes sure most of you areola is taken at the bottem. Some pink can be seen above their upper lip (except in my case since I have some areolas).

Keep pulling down her chin and evetually she'll get stronger and better at it.

    Good Luck!

Lol my right breast is sorer (sp) too, she likes to not open as wide for some reason. I always keep my eye on her...she also likes to reposition herself (put back onto just the nipple, and little areola lol) while shes feeding

with everything I have read, I agree with the previous posters. pull the lip out or wait till the mouth is open really wide to latch on and have the babe latch on chin first, La leche told me that, so that they take in more of the bottom area of the areola, making them have to purse that bottom lip out more.

    Re: latching difficulties

In my experience as a prenatal chiropractor I have found that often the reason that the baby is not latching properly (i.e. not opening wide enough or preferring to feed on one side, or mom ending up having really, really sore nipples) is because the baby has a misalignment of the jaw or the first few bones in the neck.  It is a very easy thing to correct and really makes things easier for baby and mom especially.  Adjusting a baby is much different than adjusting an adult and is very gentle.  You can find a chiropractor in your area who is trained to work with baby's by going to www.icpa4kids.org and click on find a doctor.  There is also some info about latching difficulties on my clinic web site which is in canada at http://www.entertogetwell.ca/chiropractic-articles/pregnancy/breastfeeding-problems.aspx

Good luck with your breastfeeding experience.  I hope things are going great!
