    Hey!

I actually interviewd a doctor recently who specializes in fetal maternal medicine -- so, high risk pregnancies, basically. There seems to be a trend towards using progesterone in women who are deemed high risk for miscarriage or early delivery -- if you have twins, are older, have lost a baby before, etc. No one is quite sure yet *how* exactly the treatment works, but only that it does seem to have an effect on keeping the baby in your belly longer.

Progesterone therapy is still a pretty new treatment, as far as I'm aware, and there is always lots of research being done on it at any given time. But those are the basics that I was able to get from the doc. I'll go back over my notes and see if I have anything else of particular interest in there!

    Hope this helps a bit!

Hi there, Amanda.  Congrats on your pregnancy (I have been MIA).  With each of my pregnancies, I HAVE to take progesterone or I will miscarry (have had 5).  For some reason once I become pregnant, my body stops producing it.

When I was pregnant with Gavin and Darian (who are 10 and 9), I had to get injections in my butt twice a week til part-way through my 2nd tri.  I dont remember the specifics, but I didnt need to past a certain point.  With Raegan (who is 20 months), I did the suppositories instead, and for the first 15 weeks.  I am pregnant again and just got my prescription for the suppositories again.

I am not sure what or why your Dr would suggest it NOW, and not before, but I dont have that info.  If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

    Hi Amanda,

I had to have the suppositories when pregnant with my son due to early miscarriages.  They checked my level as soon as I found out I was pregnant and I had to continue until a little after 4 months.  I was told them that the ovaries produced the progesterone until that point and after a certain point, I assume about 4 months, the placenta is developed enough to start producing it.  I have not had to take them with this pregnancy and I am thankful for that.  My doctor keeps checking my levels just to make sure because of my miscarriage history.

Thanks megan for the info. I read up a little bit on it.

These injections are not for early pregnancy b/c i have no problem staying preggo early. They are for keeping me pregnant longer. Its a new therapy for women who have had a preterm delivery. It reduces the risk by 1/3. Right now my risk of preterm is something like 40% so it knocks that down quite a bit. I talked to my doctor more about it and we will be doing it starting next week probably, and all the way to 36 weeks or delivery whichever is first.

Hi , i have been taking shots since i was 16 weeks.. I am on my 8th pregnancy.. I have lost 2 , one at 17 weeks and one at 24 weeks and all the others i carried 34 to 38 weeks. only one considered full term.. so they are doing the shots with this one to see how i do.. it is to increase my chances by 40% of carrying longer.. so we will see.. I get a shot once a week in the butt.. yeah.. i hate needles but if it keeps him in longer , so be it..

Amanda, I am due Feb 19th with twins and I was started on progesterone shots at 20 weeks. There is a fair amount of research showing it helps prevent or reduce your statistical chance of pre term labor in singletons, The research for mulriples is still out. It is a good idea if you are at risk. Karen
