We use Luvs for Alex and have had no issues.  I use the store brand ones for Evan and they have been ok - and they're $3 cheaper a pack than the Luvs.  We tried the store brand ones for Alex and they leaked.  So I think it depends on the kid.

I love Pampers Swaddlers and Pampers Cruisers.  They are just soft and stretchy and cute, plus you can record points on their website for rewards (toys, books, etc.).  Luvs gave my daughter a rash.  Having said that though, I plan on trying some cheaper brands with this next one because if there is no rash problem I'd rather save the money.

At a few baby showers I've been to, the host has mentioned in the invite that each guest could bring a small package of diapers and be entered for a door prize drawing. It was optional, but people usually bring a couple of different brands and sizes that you can try out with the new baby.  I always thought it was fun.  But the door prizes should be something good since diapers are expensive and they are usually going above and beyond the original gift.

Also, the Wal-mart website sometimes offers free diaper samples.  There's a Huggies one out there today but they change them frequently: http://walmart.triaddigital.com/Free-Samples.aspx.  You could start getting some now and then you'll have a few samples to try when baby gets here.

Thanks everyone for your input... I also like the idea of the shower door prize thing. A friend of mine did something similar and she collected so many that she hasn't bought any in 3 months... Great ideas!

i used pampers with my other 2 children and i plan on using pampers swaddlers this time as well. they are soft and hold in the messes! the reward program is a nice bonus also!

I have used Luvs with all three of my kids. They are cheaper than huggies and pampers. I tried all of them, and huggies leaked with all three of my kids. Pampers are good, but Luvs are just cheaper.

I'm not Cindy, but it is the pampers rewards program.  You can log in points for the diapers and wipes that you buy and then redeem them for toys, books, photo sessions, etc.  You can check it out on the Pampers website.  It's just a nice little bonus.

eh this time around the program pretty much sucks.. you have to pay shipping and pretty much it equals what you'd pay for the stuff in the store.. not exactly a bargin or anything.. they do have printable stuff you dont have to pay shipping on.. like sears picture studio.. but you and pretty much find good coupons to use for them anywhere.. last time they did it (way back in 2000 & 2001!) they had awesome stuff!! Anyone else remember it then? or am I the only one who's been buying diapers for 7 years straight now?

Huggies or pampers are great! most of the cheaper brands use a sticky substance on the flaps, they don't reclose so easily which is helpful If you have a squirmy baby. Huggies and pampers use a kind of velcro. + cheaper brands really don't seem to hold as much. I had a couple of incidents where Luvs got so full overnight, they burst open. That nasty, gummy crystal stuff was everywhere. YUCK!

Oh yea, the silicone.  I only had that happen once - when Alex crawled into my neighbor's pool!  EEK!

Our Luvs never fill overnight.  The thing about Luvs though is that you can't find coupons for them anywhere!

And yes Helene, you are the only one who has been buying diapers for 7 years! 

Brenna that's not true about luvs and coupons! I get them in from time to time for $3 off.. 2 weeks ago in the sunday paper they had luvs coupons too.. Aidan had a terrible reaction from luvs (to the point of bleeding with in minutes ) We had to go to 1/2 cloth for a while (me using cloth? did hell freeze over yet??)
