    Potty Training...

So how's that going for everyone? Aidan is pretty much out of diapers he started to use the potty about a month before he turned 2 (june), after a incident of falling into the toilet he regressed, not that I blame him, but now.. he's good with it as long as he's naked.. he hasn't mastered the understanding of underwear.. we aren't anywhere near ready to go diaperless for night time!! This is all a surprise for me since the girls were almost 3 when they were finally trained.

We were at an indoor playground on Thursday and Alex got out of the ballpit and asked to use the potty!   I was so excited!  But nothing has happened since.  Oh well.  I'll take what I can get.

That was the first time.  And he made no big deal out of it. I went back to where the other mothers were and I was so excited!   They were doing golf claps for him because he wanted to be a big boy and wanted no fuss.

I made sure to brag all about him to his daddy and grandparents in front of him though.  And when we got home, he wore boxer briefs for about an hour.  Killer Cute!!!

Things are going very slooooooooooooooow over here.

I ask him all the time, but he'll tell me no.  I'll try just putting him on but he jumps off.  He hates getting a stinky diaper changed & I tried to explain if he goes in the potty then he won't need his diaper change, but he's never gone poop on the potty.  I'll get him all psyched up about it, and then he runs and hides and does his thing.

I'm hoping by 3, which only gives me a few more months.

We are woking on this as well.  He turned 2 on Oct 10th.  Since he's in daycare all day and there are other kids I dont fell like he's getting the one on one he needs to get this down.  He know what the potty is for but he prefers playing with it cuz it plays music and sings and makes flushing noises.  This last week I let him stay with my mom instead and she lets him wear underwear around the house and when he feels wet he runs to the potty.  she said she will keep him next week too so they can continue to work on this.

How long did it take for you guys to get your kids trained?? Any tricks??  It would be great to have him trained by the time I have the baby!

    Re: Potty Training...

Followed my moms advice. She said to go straight to cloth undies. you can buy ones that say "Training pants" but they are just doubly thick cloth undies. Then i got a few plastic covers (which didn't really help very much after the first few days). The first 3 days she peed consistently. She just kept a steady flow of one or two drops. The first morning I had 8 spots to clean by 9 am!! I was not impressed. It took about 3 days for her to start peeing real quantities at a single time. So she'd pee (maybe maybe not in the potty) then again about an hour -two hours later. Which was a vast improvment BUT then she'd pee so much it would make a mess outside of her plastic covers. Which was ok. I was resigned to cleaning pee for a few weeks- i bought lysol wipes they were great! Anyways....I would lock her in the bathroom wiht me when i would shower and put her on the little potty (not the potty topper b/c i didn't trust she wouldn't fall) and give her a book or toy of some sort. She would poo only when she had some privacy. She had her first handful of poos in the potty...now she will poo anywhere anytime but she was really shy to in the beginning!.....Then i started playing the "can you make a splash" on the potty topper ...icky but successful! I do not believe in giving children sugar but i gave her an m& m and told her she could have another one if she could pee in the potty. It took a few days for her to figure it out and in the beginning i'd need to run water to help her go.....but within about a week we were at the point where if i told her to go and i knew she had to go then she would.....then she would eventually ask for it as she was peeing...then 6 seconds before she would pee.....and then after what seemed like forever here we are...potty trained for 2 weeks already! We used potty elmo- press his hand and he ask for water then to use his potty. It is magnetic so when he sits on it hurray he did it otherwise ..uh oh he had an accident! And we got the potty book for girls which we read EVERY day.....and I read everything i could get my hands on and honestly nothing was very helpful. Consistency was the key with naomi and changes to it caused regression. HEr and dh were at the park one day and she said she had to go- dh should have said ok try to hold it and walk back (10 min...she couldn't have held it but known she was supposed to) instead he said "um....i guess you can pee in your diaper this time" which is NOT the right answer. I actually have two potty topper and two potties...one for home and one for travel. The travel potty i would carry in my stroller to place down wherever she needed to go but now she can hold it well enough to keep it in the car so we can run out if needed and i just carry a potty topper with us at all times. Children: the challenge suggested not making TOO big of a deal about it- be happy and excited and reward them but don't let them think you are the one who wants them to do it b/c then it can easily turn into a power struggle. We see that when she asks for potty even though she doesn't have to go just to get a bit of reading or to get out of going to bed or to get out of church when she is bored!! Good luck!

    Re: Potty Training...

My Katie is doing rather well for working on this for not only a week. 3 nights accident free. one with an accident.  The first day she had 6 accidents. Day 2 she had 4. Today 2.  She's getting better.  I only have two problems now though.  I started off wiping her potty chair down once a day with clorox wipes and noticed that she was getting a horrible rash on her butt and private areas.  She has extremely sensitive skin and this bothers her so she doesn't like to go on the potty anymore (even though now I wash it with soap and water).  The rash is getting better thank god but I feel so bad for her that her first experience was a bad one.  Second, when I ask her if she has to go potty she says no 90% of the time whether she has to go or not.  Other times she says yes and we end up sitting there for an hour playing pat a cake or saying abc's b/c she really doesn't have to go.  I don't know if that is fear of the potty or terrible 2's rearing its evil little head. She knows what yes and no means so I don't get why she does this.

Is there something in the mommy gene that gives you extra patience? I don't have any patience at all naturally, but when it comes to my little girl I seem to get extra bursts of it just when I think I am running out.

So how is everyone's progress with potty training going?

I have a feeling I may be the only one who is really stinking in this department (no pun intended).

My son has great days and then horrible days.  He's best when he's pantless. Sometimes he'll ask to have a pullup on just so he doesn't have to bother with the potty.  Dh thinks I'm trying to force it too much.....are you kidding me?  He's 3 now! Ughh....

Aidan prefers to be naked. That's how he trained, naked, we own a steam vac Wink This is also how we trained the girls, no diapers during the day at all, if they had a accident they saw and felt it! I'd just cut him off of diapers during the day totally, hide them all!

He's been going comando around the house and doing great.......hasn't had an accident in over a week!  At home he can only wear a pullup at nap and bedtime.......and if we're going out for a bit, which I noticed he will totally take advantage of and go in it when given the opportunity.  But I'm still excited about the quick turn-around.  He goes to school 2 days a week, and tomorrow and I am taking him in big boy undies (with lots of xtra clothes!) we'll see how that goes.
