    Rice Cereal Question

When did you all start adding a bit of cereal to your baby's bottles? We've increased Eva's bottle size at night and she's still hungry after she's finished. She wakes up every 2 hours and is doing so b/c she's hungry. DH and I think if we added a bit of cereal to her bottles she'd sleep better and longer.

    Re: Rice Cereal Question

    How old is she?

There is actually evidence that adding cereal to the bottle will not help.  Apparently it is one of those urban myths.

Brenna, I've heard that as well.

Babies need to eat so often because they are on a liquid diet, so they digest the food soooo much more quickly than solids. i've heard nurses suggest that you simply feed them as often as they like -- and i've yet to hear that you should actually add cereal to their bottle (though of course, that doesn't mean that it's not okay!). I would ask your doctor about this one -- perhaps Eva is just ready to start taking in some solids before her bedtime feeding, and that itself will tide her over a little longer into the night. but i'd definitely check in with the doc -- just to get a professional opinion!

There's an article that might be worth reading. I will see if I can find more...

    Re: Rice Cereal Question

Eva will be 10 weeks tomorrow. At what age can I start incorporating solids? I'd think she's still too young.

After I read your post I did some research and you are 100% right. It is an old wives tale that adding cereal to the bottle will keep babies fuller longer. We've just increased her formula at her feedings to 6 ounces. She eats about every 2 - 4 hours. I guess if she's hungry she's hungry. She's been sleeping a good 6-10 hours at night since we've increased her formula intake.

    Thanks again ladies.

I believe that most doctors recommend introducing solids around 6 months of age. A 6-10 hour stretch is a good amount of sleep for a 10 week old. You must be loving that!

"Sleeping through the night" does not mean 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.!   When pediatricians ask if the baby is STTN, they usually mean 6 hours.

I started at 2 months but you have to be careful because it can be dangerous...

That was with my son my daughter is exclusively breastfed at almost 5 months and I am not starting her on any solids until she's at least 6 months.
