Well, I still have not done the glucose tolerance test, but when I had blood drawn for AFP the Dr also had them draw to test my hemeglobin A1C, which for those of you who don't know shows how your blood sugars have been running for at least the past 3 months. I am happy to say that the AFP was negative and the hgb was normal, Yay! That's not to say that I still won't develop GD, but as of right now my body is processing sugar the right way. I would be in total amazement if I didn't have GD this time, especially since I weigh 20 lbs more with this pregnancy. All I can do is eat healthy and hope! My Ob said that if the tolerance test at 20 weeks came back negative, I would have to repeat at 26 weeks. I'll keep you ladies posted.

Mary Ann, why were you out of work at 24 weeks with your second? Do you have other issues as well? I was on insulin with number 2 from about 4/5 months until delivery and it never posed a problem with work. What finally put me off a week early was the ligament pain in my inner thighs making it just about impossible to walk. I was quite a sight to see, I think that many people that I worked with thought I was having contractions. I think that as a nurse, you have an advantage, you know all the risks and benefits and how to go about achieving your desired outcome! Have faith in yourself and good luck! Smile

I too am pre-diabetic outside of pregnancy.  I was on metformin twice a day but was taken off of it as soon as I knew that I was pregnant.  Metformin is not indicated in pregnancy.  Why are you still on it?  I would check with another MD practice.

Im not sure which one of us you are refuring too, but as for me, i see a highly specialized dr in seattle and one in everett and the high risk ob in my area. Metformin is not something they will put you on if you are pregnant and do not already take it, but if you have severe diabetes where you are taking metformin and insulin before pregnancy they will ususally have you continue it. As i said in an earlier post, metformin is a class b medication with no strong evidence either way on effects on the fetus. The practice in the hospital in seattle's dr assured me that he has plenty of pregnant women who take this every day, every year and they and their babys are just fine. It usually says in pregnancy books that it is not indicated in pregnancy because there are some other drugs that are supposed to do a better job of controlling your blood sugars. They also say Lantus insulin isnt indicated because its long lasting but im on that too. These are the meds that work the best with my body to control my sugars and your dr should work to find the best ones for you with as little risk to the fetus as possible. I personally would have refused to take it if it had been a class c or d medication and i really researched it after they told me to continue.

I agree with Mudd82 (Sorry, I didn't get your first name). I see a physician that specializes in high-risk pregnancies, not that she's a know it all, but I was on Metformin prior to pregnancy with a directive to discontinue due to better controlled sugars, but then I got pregnant and my OBGYN started me back on it (500mg BID). She says that the risk of taking the medication is far less than the problem that uncontrolled sugars would cause my unborn child. I haven't done the research like Mudd82, but I'm glad someone has. It makes me want to do a little more internet searching so I am an informed consumer. Thanks for everyone's input, I'm learning a lot!

    Re: Any diabetic moms here?

    Hello,

I am 6 weeks pg with my 7th pregnancy. I have a 15 yr old son that was placed for adoption at birth, an 8 1/2 yr old daughter, and a 4 yr old son. I have been pg 6 times in the past 9 years and have had 3 mc.

I am diabetic and was on Janumet twice a day. My reg dr took me off last Wednesday and my numbers are 120's - 180's with the highest numbers in the am when I wake up. I have my first appt with my OB next Monday. They have decided to wait until then to see about insulin. I did shots last year with that pg and was taking 4 shots a day with 2 in the am and 2 in the pm and they did nothing to lower my numbers, so I am courious to see what the new dr will do. I am exercising and watching my diet and had lost 7.5 pounds since last week.

My first son was 6 lbs 15.9 oz and was here 2 days before his due date. My daughter was 2 weeks late and was 8lbs 6 oz. I had GD with my last son and he was 11 lbs 2 oz and 6 days past his dd. And believe it or not I had the hardest delivery with the smallest baby. He was delivered at a hospital with a very uncaring OB. I delivered my 11 lb'er at home.

I also have PCOS and am "ama" - how I hate that term..... and last yrs and this yrs pg was a huge surprise. I am not have any complications as of yet, but worry that I have really no pg symptoms.

So did your dr's not even mention enduction or did you not allow it? Both my boys were enduced a week before my due date, which although pitocin is evil, I liked knowing when things would get started. Do you have a snack before bed? Usually your sugar's are high in the morning because they are dropping so low while you sleep that your body is compensating by releasing stored sugars. I do believe you about the littlest being the hardest, I have heard that before. The big one's help you push them out. Kudo's to you for having such a healthy big baby! Good luck with your sugar control! I should be having my first glucose tolerance test in the next couple of weeks and I'm praying that against all odds I won't have GD this time.

Welcome  Jenn, and hello to everyone.....

I have an interesting situation which is somewhat opposite of yours. Before I logged on this morning, I was thinking I need to vent. I went to see my OB yesterday and found out I was having a little girl!! (Yea!). However we discussed my sugars with GB and she insists that my a.m. fasting sugars should be 105 or below. I had 4 last month that were slightly higher(106,109,116, and 119). She has increased my Metformin. So I'm not sure what your protocol will be. I think my OB is hypervigilant about the GD, which I'm thankful for because she is concerned about my baby's health, but I know I am more frustrated because I have been working hard to keep my sugars under control (food journaling, the normal 4 sticks, 2am snacks). but doesn't seem to be enough.

I have found that what mfleming said is true also, with the bedtime snack. and as I stated I am also drinking a glass of milk at 2am to keep ketones out. Have you gone to a diabetic dietician? This helped a lot, and I found that the dieting that I am used to was not the best for my GD, so I had to make some changes. I am so sorry about your mc's and congrats on the 3 healthy kids.

Can anyone let me know what they've found as acceptable sugar levels during GD from their doctors?

    Re: Any diabetic moms here?

    Hello everyone,

Well my Dr is a little stricter than yours seems to be. I have to keep my am fasting under 95 and after meals when i take it at the 1 hr mark they have to be 140 or less. So they are pretty much trying to keep me at the normal sugar ranges for anyone. I like you have a few errant ones that dont match up but they dont usually change my med doses unless they are consistently off for a day or two.

I wouldnt worry too much about them upping the metformin, i take the max 2,000mg a day dose, after the baby is born you should go back to your normal dose or not needing it at all. The only thing i worry about is the unpleasant side effects of stopping, starting and incresing it. I get bloating, nausousness and diarreah yuck. My specialist had said that a prego womans need for extra metformin, insulin etc.. doubles even triples during pregnancy because of the hormons secreted by the placenta so it wouldnt be surprising if you needed a lot more before you gave birth or had to add insulin and then went back to normal.

Well i hope everything works out for you.

    Re: Any diabetic moms here?

I had my daughter and second son with a midwife. My daughter was born at the birth center and my son at home. Last year the OB kept freaking out that I had a baby at home and used a midwife blah, blah, blah. This comes from a dr. who's office didn't even offer to check and make sure I that I indeed have a m/c.

I don't snack before bed and I have started getting up around 3 am to take my numbers and they are high then also in the 170's. I am really wishing Monday am would hurry up and get here. It is my first appt with my new OB. He is new to the area so I do not know if I will like him or not.

    Here's wishing everyone luck.....

    Re: Any diabetic moms here?

Well, I'm officially bummed. My 1 hr came back high, big suprise! I scheduled my 3 hr for this friday. I don't understand why I had to be fasting for the 1st two pregnancies and now they tell me it doesn't matter. The pathopysiology of it makes no since to me. Why would I eat and then drink an obscene amount of glucola on top of eating? Of course it will be high. Whatever! I'm just frustrated b/c I was looking to switch to a different OB (I'm not meshing well with my current office) and was told by the new office that if I ended up on insulin that I would be switched to a high risk OB anyway. So basically I would tranfer to them and they would transfer me to someone else. I just feel like crap right now and needed to vent. The icing on the cake is that I'm a student, I don't work and my husband's insurance is not the greatest. I just know this is going to create a massive amount of new bills on top of the ones we are already struggling to pay. Thanks for listening!

Hello all, I am new to this site.  I am 23, going to be 24 next week, and pregnant with my first child.  I am a diabatic and have celiac disease.  I have already seen my diabetes educator and I go to see the OB tomorrow, I cant wait!!!  I am extremely nervous about the effects the diabetes and celiac will have on my baby, but I am testing religiously and watching what I eat.  I was on the depo shot for 2 1/2 years and got pregnant 3 months after getting off so I have no idea how far along I am.  I am excited to join you all in this quest to motherhood and just wanted to stop in and say hello.

    Re: Any diabetic moms here?

    Hello all,

I know having a disease like diabetes is extremely scary when pregnant.  I personally am hypothyroid and dependent on medication, and 6 months pregnant.  When I first found out I was pregnant and knew I would need medication to control my thyroid I contacted the Texas Teratogen Information Service.  It is completely free and their number is 1-800-733-4727.  They were able to tell me how my new medication would affect my baby (luckily it will not have an affect), I was relieved after I spoke to them.  I wish you all the best of luck.
