    Re: Lupus

Welcome to the Lupus club - it is truely a life changing experience.  I was unofficially diagnosed with Lupus 7 years ago, and officially diagnosed last summer by my OB, and it is not the funniest group to belong too :)  Luckily, meds worked wonders on me and I lead a normal life.  As for pregnancy - my son is beautiful!  He just turned 3.  During his pregnancy I had frequent blood work, was on my medication (Plaqunil), and took baby asprin.  I also received extra ultrasounds.

With Lupus you do increase your odds of miscarriage.  I didn't believe it until we loss our second son (sorry - it isn't all good news here).  My advice?  If you fear ANYTHING is wrong with your baby - go to the doctor right away!  We wouldn't have loss our second if I would have trusted my gut feelings, instead of listening to a unknowing, young OB.  ALSO - find an experienced doctor that works with high-risk, in addition to your peri.  And relax - enjoy those daily fetal movements, and if you don't have any one night (even with the help of sugars), go to the doctor.

Lupus patients have similar odds to miscarriage as a normal pregnancy, and the loss sucks.  But listen to your body, and enjoy every minute you get to know your baby.  It is the most amazing feeling to hold that tiny person in your arms for the first time - one that I have always cherished (and have to remind myself when my 3 year old is in a tantrum!)  Just remember - watch for signs of preterm labor.  My son was born at 40 weeks and 1 day, buy my second was born at 28 weeks.

I hope this helps and doesn't scare you.  Family is an important thing to help you through this - you may not want to clean your house one day because sleep sounds much better, and then family is REALLY important - especially if they know how to work the vacuum :)  Please feel free to contact me and congratulations on your baby!
