42 and expecting my first baby

Well, this little miracle is being born to a mom and dad who are both retired and home full-time. I'm 42 and he's 63 and we are over the moon! I don't know anything about birthin babies and even less about diapers, bottles, breastfeeding, types of clothing for summer babies, just about everything. Greatest news is that my doc says everything looks real good and we only see him every four weeks as opposed to every week when we first got pregnant. So any advice about registering, feeding, just about anything...I've got time to research and worry! Actually I've never been more excited about anything else, I wanted to wait until I could retire and spend time with my child and then we had problems (couple of miscarriages and problems getting pregnant), I doubted making the right decision, guess we'll find out, she will not want for attention! Good luck everyone! Sandy

Congratulations on your pregnancy!  That's wonderful that you will be able to be home with your baby.  I am 36 and have a 2 1/2 year old at home and I work full-time.  It's a constant struggle because I would love to be home with him!  I am lucky that my mother is able to watch him while I'm at work.

Websites are great sources of information.  I personally love Pampers swaddlers and then we switched to Pampers Cruisers (did not like pampers baby dry) Huggies supreme are ok, but I thought that my son always smelled like pee when he wore them.

Bottles: I like the Playtex nursers.  The disposable liners are great (especially when a bottle rolls under the bed/couch for a few days (yuk) then you can just throw away the liner and pop in a new one!

I loved breastfeeding, but I didn't produce enough milk to sustain him so I had to supplement.  I think that my problem was that I didn't drink enough water or eat right in the beginning.  That's really important for your milk production.  Also, I would have bought a breast pump sooner to help get things flowing.

    Good luck with everything.

Congrats on your pregnancy.  I would love to know how things are going.  I am not in your due date club, but I noticed your age and was curious.  I am also preggo with my first and I am 39.  I am only around 5wks,3days, so they have me so nervous I do not know what to do.  I'd love to know how your begginning was that everything is running so smooth now.

    take care, Kim

Hi Kim, Well, we just had a check-up yesterday at 30 wks. I had been having some lower abdominal pains and it appears that my baby has moved out of breech position into the head down preparing for birth. It looks like she may come at 37 weeks, at least we hope she waits until then. Apparently when you are older there are chances of early delivery. As far as in the beginning, because I suffered from three previous miscarriages and had such problems conceiving they did an ultrasound every week until it looked like we were out of danger from miscarriage. Although my doc said there's no evidence to show that checking each week prevents miscarriage it's the relief you get when you see progression. I was afraid of every twinge and cramp and back pain until a friend of mine told me that it's just the baby attaching and things moving around. So the ultrasounds and being informed really eased my mind. I hate to say this, but be careful of the horror stories on the internet (feels kind of hypocritical since I've posted my two cents) but it's sort of like when you're in school and get convinced you have every illness because you think you have those symptoms. I really liked the Mayo Clinic guide to a healthy pregnancy. It is factual without being too "technical" and gives you a good play by play. Good luck and I'll try to keep you posted. It's been so long since I've been around and taken care of babies it's all new to me, plus most of my acquaintances have had their children and some are even becoming grandparents, so I really don't have a "mom-group" to confer with about baby issues. So, no baby showers or Mommy Groups, that's one of the disadvantages of being an older mommy. Take Care, Sandy

Thanks for the info and here's hoping for another 7wks.  I can understand the u/s thing, they just make me so nervous as to what they will or will not find.  I know every pregnancy is different, and I agree with you on the internet stories.  They can make you go insane.  I have checked out Mayo Clinic and it is a valuable source of info.  I am waiting for the day I can tell people.  Until now me and my hubby share the secret.  I'll be checking in to see how you're doing.
