Im 22 weeks along and we've been diagnosed with Placenta Previa?

hello all! We are expecting our first litlle one here in July, and at at recent ultrasound, the doctor diagnosed us with having the placenta covering the cervix. Does anyone out there have knowledge or expreience on how to cope with this issue?? Im trying to stay positive, but i cant help but worry...We are also going to get a second opinion from another prenatologist so they can get another look. What are some things i need to beware of?? I have read that a cesarean section is usually what doctors have to do if the placenta doenst move. This makes us upset because we were anticipating doing a water birth natural vaginal delivery. If anyone has any advice out there, i would dearly appreciate it, Thanks:)

I don't have placenta previa but there are a few moms here that have it. Placenta Previa can correct itself before delivery but it doesn't a natural birth may be out of the question because if the placenta comes out first you could bleed out and the baby could suffocate. You doctors will probably keep a closer eye on you until you deliver. I hope the best for you and hope you get the water birth and natural delivery :)

I hope that things work out for you and the previa corrects itself. If it does not then you are correct, a vaginal birth is out. I understand that you have envisioned your experience and what you want it to be and how devistating it would be to have that taken away. The most important thing to remember is the ultimate goal here is to have a baby, right? Just think of holding that little one for the first time. It won't matter how you got there, just that you did. You also can opt for a vbac with future pregnancies, providing that the same thing does not happen, which is unlikely. Best of luck, and keep us posted!

I was just diagnosed with placenta previa last week (14th week).  Doc said there is a very good chance it can correct itself.  I have also done a lot of research online and read a lot of blogs from women who experienced it and many said that it corrected itself in time for them to have a vaginal birth.  The few that didn't, had to have a c-section.  At this point, my only advise is to expect the worst (being a c-section) and hope for the best.  Ultimately, at least to me, all that matters is that my baby is healthy.

    Good luck!

First, try to relax, I have never had placenta problem, but I've heard that it usually does correct itself, they will watch you closely, with u/s.

But, I have had 4 c-sections, all went smooth, its takes about 5 min. to get the baby out, then they close you up... You are out within one hr.

Less, if its your first c.section.. It takes longer to heal, my advise, get up when they take the catherder out, and start peeing and cleaning your room, just a bit, so that you will be able to deal with the pain and soreness, because once you go home, you wont' have nurses fetching you anything... The nurses think I'm crazy, but it works for me, with 5 kids, and being self employed, I have to get back to normal, kids, have to be picked up from school, errands, and such...

If you do have to have a c-section,, don't worry, it will be Ok... Dr's. even play music while your getting it done....I will pray everything will work out for you..

thanks everyone for all the kind words... I actually went to another obgyn the next week to get a second analysis because we werent too sure that the communication between the perinatologist and my doctor was correct, one saying marginal placenta and the doctor saying total previa...so at the second u/s the other perinatologist didnt even see anything like this at all!!! she showed us on the moniter and everything and explained the placenta was far from being close to the cervix!! we couldnt believe it. thats such a thing to be misdiagnosed of, that we were wondering what couldve happened if we didnt get the second opinion...

Hi, I had placenta previa with my first child, and I remember being so worried. It showed up during my first ultrasound. I don't think my whole cervix was covered because I remember that I didn't have any bleeding, nor was I told to refrain from sex, or heavy lifting. I had to do another ultrasound weeks later, when the uterus grew bigger, because the placenta tends to move upward with the uterus. Luckily for me my placenta did move, and the previa was over with after that day.

From what I remember, depending on the location, you have the possibility of hemmorhaging which is why they do a c-sec. If your cervix is completely covered, you might be asked to refrain from sex and any strenuous activity as it may cause bleeding which can pose problems to the placenta. I also think I remember told that most placenta previas correct themselves, so chances are yours may too. Are you booked for another ultrasound to see if it moved?

My placenta previa corrected itself by the 2nd trimester and I was able to have a vaginal delivery without any issues. I welcomed a beautiful baby girl.

     Good luck to you all...Shaila
