    Diabetic diet question

Hi.  I don't have diabetes, but my doctor wants me to follow a gestational diabetes diet throughout pregnancy because I am significantly overweight and 36.  I met with a dietician and she told me to eat 2 carbs for breakfast, 4 for lunch, 4 for dinner and one at each snack.  She wants me to also eat a protein with my snacks.  I have been having things like crackers and string cheese or fruit and cottage cheese, but the snacks are getting boring.  Does anyone have suggestions for good snack ideas?  Also, I have a huge sweet tooth.  Any ideas for something sweet that still lets me stick to this diet?  Thanks!

Since you don't actually have diabetes, try eating a granola bar with choc. chips , basically anything you eat, would be fine, in a smidchen size, if you love candy bars, try the trial size. one thing to remember, tiny portions.

I've always been on the fence for my glucose test, I flunk the first one, but I always pass the second one. So I always just watch my diet anyway, I'm overweight, from having 5 kids, lost all weight except for the 1st one and the last one, so now, I just try to be healthy, will be trying for our last baby,/babies, my hubby wants twins, then worry about losing weight, once your done having kids, try not to stress. I'm almost 37,

Oh, eggs hard boiled are also a good snack..

    Re: Diabetic diet question

Hi, what I like to snack on is chocolate pudding, not loaded with calories, and has milk in it already, plus, buy the cup size and eat only one, already measured. I also like to make a Chex mix, has nuts and cereal in it. How about almonds, peanuts, yougurt. Since you are not officially gest. diabetic, I would think some of these suggestions are okay, but ask your nutritionist first. I also like to have veggies with a ranch dip. V8 with a couple olives, and a sprinkle of tobasco sauce. Let me know if you like any of these ideas. If I come up with any more, I will post them for you. Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestions ladies!  I have had raisin bread with peanut butter and the pudding in a cup container.  I have actually gotten nasty morning sickness since I first posted, so I wasn't able to follow the diet as closely as I should have.  Now I am on Vitamin B6 and unisom, so hopefully I will be able to start eating healthy again.  I had my first appt yesterday and was already given the glucose test.  I should get the results in about a week.

    Re: Diabetic diet question

I had gestational diabetes with both of my other pregnancies and am pretty sure I'll get it again with this one.  One of my favorite snacks was a quesadilla with cheese and salsa.  I used one flour tortilla, and just loaded it with salsa, sprinkled with cheese.  I got the protein and veggies with my carb.  We used to have a bakery where I lived during my first pregnancy.  They specialized in low carb cakes and pastries.  Talk about yummy!  That shop saved my sanity!  I also did well with low carb/high protein bars.  I would buy them at Costco or Sam's Club and have them in the AM for a snack.  Peanut butter was also a fav.

Good luck with the results!  You're helping yourself out tremendously by starting your pregnancy off with a healthy diet.
