BOY!
Luca John was born one week ago on 3-31 at 12:43 am. He weighed 6 pounds and 15 ounces and was 19 inches long.
This was a very different experience from the birth of my daughter with over 24 hours of actual labor, getting stuck at 7cm because of her posterior position, getting an epidural, pushing for 3 hours and ending up with a vaccuum assisted delivery. Nope, Luca's birth was way too quick for any of that.
I decided even though I was having mild contractions that I would go into work Sunday night. I work 7pm-7am shifts as a nurse at the birthing center where he was born. I figured that the best thing to do in early labor is to move around and try to distract yourself from the contractions until they really kick in. Around 1030 that night it really started to pick up. I called my husband and had him drop off our 20 minth old daughter at a friend's house and head towards the hospital. At 1100pm I passed off my patient to another nurse and had the nurse midwife check me. I was 4cm dilated at 1115pm. After that the contractions started coming every 2-3 minutes and in an hour and a half he was born. It was crazy intense. I basically got into my room, got into the whirpool tub where I labored for awhile and started pushing with the contractions. They had me get out of the tub and sit on the toilet where my water broke and I felt the baby was coming quickly. Somehow my nurse, the midwife and my husband dragged me back to bed from the toilet where I wanted to stay and three contractions later he was born! Very quick and very intense. At one point in the tub I think I surrendered to life but I did it and he is beautiful! I was so surprised to have a little boy, I was guessing girl all along.
We left the hospital with a bili blanket for jaundice and unfortunately it got worse over the next 24 hours so he had to be re admitted to the hospital for a little over 24 hours for phototherapy. It sucked. I stayed in the hospital with him but they wouldn't let me nurse him because they didn't want him out from under the lights until the next day when his level dropped. We went home for the weekend with the bili blanket again and now as of yesterday he's free from it and doing great. HE is a fabulous nurser and a pretty mellow baby. (compared to my first)
Big sister is doing pretty well with him. She gives him lots of hugs and kisses and likes to "help" with diaper changes and baths. A few times she's been a little too rough with him but we're working on it each day. Mostly, she's just been a little sassier to my husband and I, not listening and testing our patience daily. I guess thats normal toddler stuff though. As you can see from the picture above she likes to nurse the baby :)
Anyway, that about sums it up. I hope everyone is doing well and that you're hanging in there these last few weeks or days. Can't wait to read your birth stories as well.
Molly
