The baby might be too big....

ok so 4 1/2 weeks ago I had a sonogram and they measured the baby at being 5lb and 5oz already.  The doctor didnt seem too concerned until my last appointment.  She scheduled a sonogram for this week to get an idea of how big the baby is.  I'm not a very big person and I'm afraid that she is going to schedule a C-section and i dont want one.  Did this ever happen to anyone else? and what actually happened?  do you get induced early or c-section???

While an u/s is a good indication of fetal size it is no where definate. My sister's doctor scheduled a c-section for her due to what he thought was a large baby and the baby came out weighing 6 lb 3 oz. I also just watched a birth day on discovery health 2 days ago where the mom had a scheduled c-section b/c the Dr thought that the baby weighed at least 10 lb 8 oz and it ended up only weighing 9 lb, that's a full lb and a half difference. Also, the size of you doesn't really mean a lot, what does is what type of pelvis you have and the only way to tell is by at least attempting to have a baby vaginally. The risks of a vaginal birth are way less than a c-section. If you try and baby doesn't fit, then that's a different story, but to just assume your baby will be too big for you to birth is another. You have the choice to say you prefer to be enduced to try for a vaginal birth, it's your right to at least try. When are you due? Also ask your Dr what the parameters for error are with guessing baby's weight via u/s.

Don't let your Dr. scare you. Your body was made to have babies. Dr.these days totally underestimate  women's bodies and it makes me so mad. You should read the book called "Ina May's Guide to Birth". Even if you aren't planning on having a natural birth, it is so encouraging to read what a woman's body can do all by itself. I think every women should read it before delivering, I think it will help calm your fears and give you confidence. You definitely have the right to tell your Dr. to sit on it if you want to. lol  You go girl!

I agree with all the ladies here, don't let the Dr scare you into thinking you cannot birth your child. Our bodies were designed for this purpose.  The Dr's like to do what is more convenient for them and don't take your personal situation into consideration. A friend of mine, with her first baby, was induced almost 2 weeks early because U/S said her son was almost 9 lbs, and she is a little bitty thing, 5 ft and only 120 lbs 9 months pregnant, after a day in the hospital w/ induction, her body wouldn't progress, had a c-section and had a 6 1/2 lb baby that had to stay in NICU for a couple of days because of breathing issues. Because of her horrible experience the first time around she decided to first find a different dr with the 2nd and go naturally, she had a 8 lb 4 oz baby boy, vaginally with no meds, no problems and her and baby were home the next day. This is your body, your baby, your birth experience, you get to make the decision here, not Dr. Good luck and congrats on your little one.

With my son my doctor told me that he was going to weigh 10 pounds or more. He came out weight 7 lbs 15 ozs. The doctor sat down and talked that a C-Section may be necessary but didn't really seem concerned. All the doctor can do is let you try to have the baby naturally and if it doesn't fit then C-Section might be the best bet but don't let the doc scare you into thinking you have to have one.

Hi. When I had my son they told me he was about 5lbs 13 oz at about 32 wks. The doctor said nto to go by the u/s and he thought the baby was smaller. Well my son was 10lbs 14oz when he was born. I was induced and had a really hard delivery. By the time they figured out he was too big he was stuck too bad to do a c-section. I don't want to scare you with all of this but if they are thinking the baby will be too big and you don't want a c-section talk to your doctor about being induced. If they would have indced me early my son would not have had such a tramatic birth. I just don't want to see anyone go through what I did and have a baby with breathing problems. Hope everything goes well for you and you have a smaller baby than I did.
