    mixed feelings on induction

I had a dr appt today and i am at 3cm dialated. Friday i will be 39 weeks. he tells me if i havent had her by the end of the week then he could induce labor on Tuesday.  My last two births were early with no induction needed.  he also told me that i could wait and not be induced and go longer. So i am mixed on what to do..I perfer to go naturally but now that i think about it, i could plan on a babysitter for my children on a certain day instead of worrying about who i would call on a spur of a moment. But who knows i could have her in the next couple of days. i just know my body hurts, i cant sleep comfortable, and i am so tired so next week sounds good and i'll only be a few days before 40 weeks, but on the other hand i can stick it out and let her come natually.  Ive never been induced before, i thought i read somewhere that the stuff they use to induce causes nausea, i hate being nausea.

?  Will i have the same pain as i would if i labored on my own? or would they control the pain faster then if i came into the hospital already pain stricken from labor pains.  OMG not to mention i have to be at the hospital at 5am, so not looking foward to that.  Then again i'd already be there and not have to worry about labor pains while trying to get dressed and out the door or waiting for my childcare to get my children...Man i need to stop worrying so much.

    TIA for anyone who responds.

I never had to be induced, with both of my boys my water broke at home and by the time I got to the hospital I was already at 3cm.  I think you should go for the induction, that way the doc will be at the hospital and you can get your epidural right away.  For me the doc didn't get to the hospital until it was time for the baby to come out so I was never able to have an epidural (hospital policy the doc needs to be there).  It is also great to know when to have someone to watch your other children.  If the baby waits until the doc wants to induce I say go for it, just remember your already at 3 and the baby may not want to wait until then and you can go naturally!  Good Luck!!

    Re: mixed feelings on induction

I have never gone into labor naturally.  Both my boys were induced.  I say totally to try and stick it out and go naturally.  I'm sooooooooo hoping that I can go natural this time around.  My first was induced and 13 hours of labor (I was dilated to a 4 when they started with me)- and it isn't like normal labor it is contractions from the get go about every 2-5 minutes.  I didn't get nausea though- I don't think that is an issue.  The only time I got the nausea was with the second but that wasn't until the end of labor when the pain was so bad.  I was in labor with the second - induced for 8 hours.  Not as long but the contractions are the same.  I hear that natural labor you at least start out with a larger gab between the pain and it works it way to shorter also that the pain gets worse as it goes on but induced you start out with pain and it doesn't stop until the baby comes however the pain does get worse as it goes the same as natural I just can't imagine that natural starts out as bad as induced.  My husband would like me to get induced this time around because it was so easy to know when we were going in and had everything planned but hey- I much rather go natural.  Oh, and not to mention you asked if you have to be at the hospital at 5am- it doesn't matter because you willl not get any sleep the night before anyway, because you're going to have a baby and know it.  I thought with the second one that I knew what I was going to happen so I would be able to sleep but nope not at all.  However, to answer that question with my first I had to be at the hospital at 6am but the second wasn't until like 8- guess it just depends on when they want to get started.  The decision is yours and trust me the idea of knowing when it's going to happen is nice but the labor will be more painful and different and I believe the worse part is that you're stuck in the dang bed the entire time you're in labor because they will not let you up to walk around or at least they didn't with me.  You'll have the IV, contraction monitor, and baby heart monitor on you and they will not let you up.  I would much rather be able to walk around until the last minute rather then be stuck in the dang bed all day like I was with my boys.  Hope this answers some of your questions.  Oh, they will not give you the epidural until you reach a certain dilation- just so you know and with my first I was 10 hours into it before they gave it to me (if I remember correctly I had to be at a 6), the second I didn't get one.  Good luck!  Let me us know what you decide.

While not being induced with either of my boys, I was not able to walk around either, but it was because my water broke.  I too was hooked up to all of the monitors and IV's.  Most hospitals will let you walk (most encourage it) as long as your water has not broke.  The hospital where I deliver has portable monitors that you wear while you walk and you just push your IV bag along with you.  For me it took a little while before my contractions got very painful with my first, and with my second baby the contractions were full blown the second my water broke.  I had no idea I was even in labor until my water broke.  I did get sick when I was in labor with my first, they just said it's because of the pain and my blood pressure was pretty high by that point, but no nasua or anything with my second.

I bites to be stuck in the bed all day.  The bad thing about being induced is one of the first things they do is break your water.  I guess that's why they do not let you out of the bed.  Isn't it weird how you get in so much pain that it makes you sick to your stomach.  Then you have contractions and getting sick at the same time.  I didn't get sick like that with my first but I sure did with the second.
