It's official that I have not slept for more than 3 hours at a time for 7 months (with two exceptions when he was sick and slept for 6 hours straight). My 7 month old boy wakes up, on average, every two hours. However, throughout the night he has times when he sleeps for 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours...

This is always a tough question -- i know one of the reasons the back is recommended is exactly what you are experiencing -- the babies sleep less soundly and so are less likely to smother.... i think i would ask your pediatrician in addition to hearing what everyone here has to say!
