The dilemma is now as prominent and consuming as her bump: someone has to care for the baby and someone has to go back to work. With the pregnancy halfway over, this is the time for you and your partner to discuss if one of you will be staying home with the baby, whether it’s because finances dictate it or because you just want to. And don’t just assume Mom will be the one to stay at home: In many relationships, women earn more than their partners and financially, it may make sense for the father to be the parent to stay at home. It’s increasingly common for dads to stay home with the kids -- sometimes it just makes more sense once you crunch the numbers. After all, Mr. Mom did it, so why can’t you?

So as a man, remember that your best friend is the doctor'ss on-call phone number. She'll never believe even the most common-sense, level-headed explanation of any pregnancy-related discomfort until she hears it from a doctor or a nurse. Just cut to the chase, dial the number and hand her the phone. Because after all, can you really blame her?
