Your Pregnancy: Week 38 for Dad

Dads, if you thought your sex life was easy come, easy go before your baby arrived, it's pretty much guaranteed that Mom will have zero interest in sex immediately following the birth of the baby. (Think about it: if you had just given birth, would you feel like it?)

It doesn't matter whether the birth was vaginal or via c-section, her body is going to need some time to heal. Physically speaking, doctors have traditionally recommended waiting six weeks to have sex. This gives the cervix time to close, any tears time to heal and post-partum bleeding time to stop. Many physicians now agree that most healing has occurred after two or three weeks, but it's still very important to wait until all bleeding has stopped before resuming intercourse.

There is a secondary timeline, however, and that's the emotional one. Mom may feel emotionally ready the day after, or she may need some time. Fatigue, body image and post-partum depression can all play a role. The very best thing you can do to is to be patient and supportive. If she doesn't feel quite up to it yet, make sure you find other ways to connect -- lots of affection and time spent together (both with and without the baby) will go a long way.

Now to the next question that is probably looming in your mind: will it feel different? We've all heard the locker room talk about how different sex feels for a guy after his partner gives birth. We can't tell you what changes you may notice, and the truth is, this is a time for you to be focused on your partner. Sex will very likely feel different for her, at least for a while. She may have pain or dryness, her breasts will probably be very tender and she's probably more than a little apprehensive about doing the deed considering the tremendous amounts of pain she just endured. Invest extra time making sex enjoyable for her again -- it's likely to pay dividends in the years to come.
