Your Pregnancy: Week 8 for Baby

By: ePregnancy

 Average 4 out of 5

8Last week your little tootsie was a blueberry, this week it’s back to the legume family: baby is about ¾” long, or roughly the size of a pinto bean. Luckily, that’s where the resemblance ends. Your magic bean is growing eyelid folds and the nerve cells in his retinas are beginning to form. The heart is being embellished with aortic and pulmonary valves. Fingers and toes have progressed beyond bud stage and now are formed down to the first joint, although they are still webbed. And baby finally has a funny bone − you’ll have to wait a bit to test it out, though!

Did you say webbed?
It's true! For a little while during your baby's development, she will have webbed fingers and toes. Over the normal course of growth, those tiny digits will separate into their more recognizable forms. However, if you are a smoker, this is all the more reason to quit: Smoking during pregnancy significantly elevates the risk of having a child with excess, webbed or missing fingers and toes. If your plan has been to "cut down" but not quit entirely, you should know that smoking even half a pack of cigarettes a day increases the risk of finger and toe defects by 29%! Smoking more than that increases the risk of deformity exponentially.
