Dads Can Too!
Start the bonding process with Dad as soon as the baby is born. Dads are just as good at nurturing as moms -- if you let them! While dads are more involved than ever, they still face challenges to bonding -- challenges raised by their partners, by themselves and by the facts of biology. The good news is that there are plenty of things that Dad can do to overcome these challenges, which will strengthen his caregiving skills, grow his confidence and give him an emotional connection to the baby.
Activities for Dads
Bonding is a series of interactions that deepen the emotional connection to the baby over time. To help a new dad along the way, involve him in these activities:
-
Diaper changes
-
Soothing Baby between feedings -- Dad is actually the best person for this!
-
Talking to Baby -- Babies recognize Dad's voice at birth and will respond to it
-
Wearing the baby in a carrier or sling
-
Playing with Baby -- Any kind of play, with or without toys, is extremely beneficial and fun for both Dad and Baby!
Remember: The bonding experience is absolutely critical for both parents and babies. Anything you can do to promote the attachment that serves as the basis for Baby's developing emotions is a giant leap in the right direction.
